—Anthrax Letter Attacks and the Jews—
"Don't Be Deceived, Don't Be Betrayed"

AmNote on the Anthrax Letter Attacks: Ariel Sharon Makes A Special Delivery!
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon stated that America should not expect Israel to make concession to the Arabs in order to help the U.S. form a coalition of nations against bin Laden. To quote Sharon about the US-led coalition, he said, "Our clear, unequivocal message is that this will not be at our expense." "If you ask me whether Israel will make concessions so that one Arab country or another will take part in the coalition, the answer is an emphatic no." "We will not pay the price for the establishment of this coalition." Israel's arrogance is unbelievable, since Israel owes its very existence to the generosity of America. Should we really care about a country that doesn't give one iota about the U.S. and Americans?
The proof that the Israelis care nothing about America, and only about themselves, is the fact that they knew about the al Qaeda plot to attack the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon—and did not inform U.S. intelligence about it!
Eyewitnesses saw five Middle Eastern men at a waterfront park in New Jersey laughing, clowning, and photographing themselves in front of the burning towers of the World Trade Centre. The witnesses reported the incident to authorities, and later the five men, who turned out to be Israelis, were picked up in a white van headed for New York City. Two other Israelis, that worked at the same moving company in Weehawken, NJ as the other five, were also picked up and questioned.
The Israeli government would like Americans to believe that these Israeli men were only Jews who overstayed their student visa and were working illegally as movers at a moving company without work permits. However, the FBI later found that several of the Israeli men had connections to Israeli intelligence and were presumingly here on American soil spying on Palestinian charities and organization. The FBI questioned the owner of the "moving company", Urban Moving Systems. When they went to question him again, the owner was gone. The "owner" had put his house up for sale, and he and his family had returned to Israel. When the "moving company", i.e., the Israeli spy cell, was visited by ABC News, it was found abandoned and in a disheveled condition, as if the exit was done in haste. Israeli and U.S. government officials worked out a "deal" after 71 days and the Israeli spies were then deported, and prohibited from returning to the United States for ten years.
Why were these Israeli spies celebrating the destruction of the WTC? Because these Jews knew that this act of aggression would draw the U.S. deeper into the Middle East conflict, which would be to the advantage of Israel. Clearly, Israeli intelligence had prior knowledge about the WTC attack, otherwise why else would Israeli spies in New Jersey on 9/11/01 be celebrating the attack on the World Trade Centre, as the towers burned behind them, unless they knew that Arabs were behind the controls of the airliners that crashed into the WTC towers—information that no one else knew at the time. So, the Jews hatched a plot of their own, in which Israeli intelligence, Mossad, wouldn't report the al Qaeda airliner attack plans to U.S. officials? Mossad knew, that if they keep quiet about the al Qaeda plot, the resentment against Arabs generated in the U.S. would allow them a free hand to attack the Palestinians. Who needs enemies with "friends" like this?
Did the Jewish plan work? You Bet! Within a day the Israeli military invaded the West Bank without a peep out of President Bush, and Israeli officials were encouraging him to attack the Arabs. It's as if George W. Bush's script for his "War on Terrorism" was written by Ariel Sharon and the Mossad. Bush is not only going after al Qaeda, but America is doing Israel's dirty work for them by going after other enemies of theirs, such as the Hamas.
President Bush even bought into Sharon's argument that the Israeli invasion of the West Bank and massacre in Jenin were part of his "War on Terrorism", and that's why Bush gave the Israelis a free hand in kill Palestinians there, and said nothing about stopping it until he was pressured by other Western leaders. However, a year later, the Israelis are still moving aggressively into the West Bank and have now moved into the Gaza Strip. Who has benefited the most from the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon? The Israelis. They are being allowed a free hand in the occupied West Bank, something the U.S. once prevented, thus allowing Israel to gain what it seeks; annexation of it.
The knowledge that Israeli intelligence knew about the al Qaeda plot prior to 9-11 has shed light on why, after over a year, the FBI and scientists have failed to solve the mystery of who sent the anthrax letters, that kill five Americans, and hurt others including a baby, and terrorize all of America.
The problem is, the FBI has been look at foes instead of "friends"! From the beginning the FBI was perplexed, because whoever was responsible for sending the anthrax letters, seemed to have gone to some lengths to minimize the fatalities by sealing the letters with tape, as if to prevent spores from leaking, and the letters either warned recipients that the letter contained anthrax or told them to take antibiotics. Would the people who flew the planes into the World Trade Centre be so considerate as to provide a warning and medical advice for their victims? But, the Jews would, if their goal was to incriminate Iraq and Saddam Hussein in 9-11!
Because the anthrax preparations were extremely sophisticated, the FBI has been looking for domestic a terrorist(s) in the United States with access to laboratory facilities and the technical equipment needed to make it. The FBI has also concentrated on sources that may have supplied al Qaeda with the weaponized anthrax, like Iraq that may have the sophistication needed to make such a high quality form of anthrax. The FBI's scientists have analysis the anthrax DNA, hoping that its sequence would pinpoint which laboratory was the source of the strain. However, the DNA sequence analysis, though showing small differences in the strain's sequence, failed to reveal its source, either because the anthrax strain evolved after it left the source laboratory, or the lab that the anthrax came from didn't provide a sample of it.
The Israelis have had a bio-weapons program up and running for over two decade, that has been generously funded by the U.S. with billions of dollars in foreign and military aid. Richard O. Spertzel, the former head of biological weapons inspections for the UN in Iraq, is persuaded that the anthrax letter attacks involved active state support. Spertzel says, "You could not possibly make that quality of product in a clandestine fashion. It's not the sort of thing you can do in your garage or in your basement." Furthermore, Sperizel says, "In my opinion, there are maybe four or five people in the whole country who might be able to make this stuff, and I'm one of them. And even with a good lab and staff to help run it, it might take me a year to come up with a product as good." Undoubtedly, Israeli bio-weapons scientists possess the level of sophistication and laboratory equipment required to produce the exceedingly high quality, weapons grade anthrax used in the letter attacks after 9-11. The Israelis unquestionably have anthrax strains they haven't revealed or shared stored in Israel. If the FBI looks for their variant strain of anthrax at the Israeli biological institute in Nes Tziyona, where Israel's bio-weapons program is based, and that their bio-weapons manufacturing site at Ness Ziona, they would find it there. An abstract from a scientific paper from the Israel Institute for Biological Research at Ness Ziona is included on this web page to show that advanced anthrax research is done there.
The FBI should also check the building where Urban Moving Systems was housed for anthrax spores, as well as the apartments where the Israeli agents and their associates lived. At what colleges were these Israeli agents supposedly students and who were their contacts at the schools? Princeton University may be the laboratory site for the safe storage, handling, and mail distribution of the Israeli anthrax, since the FBI found anthrax spores at a New Jersey post office that they linked to the University. Princeton University has a strong connection with the Jews and Israel, and therefore it is reasonable to believe that Israeli intelligence could have easily planted or recruited a microbiologist(s) at Princeton as part of their anthrax plot. The anthrax letters were sent from Trenton, NJ, which is only about 50 miles down U.S. Highway 1 from the Israeli cell in Weehawken, NJ and less than 15 miles from Princeton University!
Why did Mossad launch a biological attack against the United States and the American people? Certainly, they wanted to broaden the scope of America's response beyond al Qaeda by implicating Iraq in the 9-11 plot in order to create the appearance of an Arab conspiracy. By taking the 9-11 incident far beyond New York City to the whole of America with the anthrax letters, the Israelis hoped to create the appearance of an ongoing and pervasive threat of biological attack that would terrorize Americans into mobilizing against Iraq and the Islamic world. In speaking of the anthrax letter sender(s), former FBI profiler Cliff Van Zandt said, "Clearly, this was somebody trying so hard to make it seem like they are Muslim".
Israel would love nothing better than the U.S. to get rid of Saddam Hussein, since his biological weapons program, as well as a nuclear program, make Iraq a threat to Israel's plans for expansion in the Middle East. As proof that Israel thinks Iraq is a threat to them, look at the Israeli preemptive bombing of the Osirak nuclear reactor complex near Baghdad in 1981. Israel also implicated Iraq in 9-11 as retaliation for the Scud missile attacks on Israel during the Gulf War. The Jews have long memories—almost sixty years after the end of WW II they are still hunting Nazis that would be over 90! However, the Jews only need short-term memory in seeking revenge for Saddam Hussein's rewarding of Palestinian suicide bombers' families with cash for their martyrdom.
Nothing presented on this web page more clearly demonstrates the motivation for the Israelis' concealment of the al Qaeda plot from U.S. intelligence, and the contention that Israel is targeting Saddam Hussein as the fall guy for the anthrax attacks, than the PBS program Wide Angle "Saddam's Ultimate Solution"—an obvious example of Jewish propaganda meant to incite Americans into fighting Israel's battles for it in the Middle East, and an attempt to shift the blame for the anthrax letter attacks from them to Iraq! It is interesting to note the involvement of Richard Perle, who was until recently the chairman of the Defense Policy Board, an influential group of advisors to the Pentagon, in this program.
Guess what! George W. Bush proposed a preemptive stike against Iraq and Saddam Hussein as a result of the 9-11 anthrax letter attacks. According to the Washington Post 10/28/02, "Bush administration officials have acknowledged that the anthrax attacks were an important motivator in the U.S. decision to confront Iraq, and several senior administration officials say today that they still strongly suspect a foreign source -- perhaps Iraq -- even though no one has publicly said so." A dozen experts interviewed by The Washington Post said, that FBI investigators might want to reexamine the possibility of state-sponsored terrorism! Agreed, but they should be looking at Israel and not Iraq! It's funny that the Bush administration wants to disarm Iraq of its biological and nuclear weapon, yet they support the Israeli bio-weapons and nuclear programs with military aid, even though they refuse to sign the Biological Weapons Convention or the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaties. Is President Bush for or against the spread of biological and nuclear weapons throughout the world? Why doesn't he disarm Israel of their biological and nuclear weapons—Israel is by far a greater threat to stability in the Middle East than Iraq!
The advisors to the Bush administration who are pushing the hardest for war with Iraq are Zionist Jews, like Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz, both known at the U.S. Pentagon as the Kosher Nostra. Their hawkishness for war with Iraq leads to questions of their loyalty to America versus their loyality to Israel. What sort of phony Israeli intelligence have they been feeding President Bush to make him want to attack Iraq? These so-called "Americans" aren't interest in what is best for America and its people, but rather they are only interested in the survival of Israel, even at the expense of our freedoms, financial well-being, and American lives forfeited on foreign sands. These Jews are using American resources for the purposes of Israel. As pointed out in Frontline's "The War Behind Closed Doors", the Wolfowitz doctrine of preemptive military action isn't only against the Iraqis, but is also aimed at the Saudis, the Egyptians, the Pakistanis, and all Islamic states whose people oppose Israel. Frontline's "The War Behind Closed Doors" also points out that the Bush Republicans have taken advantage of the 9-11 attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, and made 'Terrorism' the new 'Communism', which allows them to pump money into the military/industrial complex and thus able to justify their moving of tax dollars away from education and social services to the Bush "War on Terrorism".
"Operation: Iraqi Freedom" is a war fought using a Business Plan, rather than a Battle Plan, written by Jews, like Richard Perle, that advocated war in order to profit from it. The PBS program, "NOW: Politics & Economy - Conflict of Interest?", states that "No one has been more vigorous or vocal in advocating a war against Iraq than Richard Perle", and "that Perle has used his proximity to Donald Rumsfeld to solicit investments for his firm"—business that includes money for the reconstruction of Iraq. According to The Center for Public Integrity, Perle used his position as a member the Defense Policy Board and Pentagon advisor to solicit significant business from the U.S. Defense Department, which was seen as a conflict of interest. Perle resigned as chairman of the Defense Policy Board over these charges of corruption, but remained a member of it. Perle and Jews like him are no less than war criminals for starting a war, that killed American soldiers and Iraqi Muslims, so they could profit from it!
The Wolfowitz doctrine makes Iraq only the first step in launching a religious war against Islam. The Bush administration has made Israel's fight their fight. The Wolfowitz doctrine is nothing more than the Israeli policy of preemptive military action against Arab nations. In fact, the Bush hawks have used the Israeli's preemptive strike against the Iraqi Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981 as its precedent for seeking a holy war with Iraq. The 9-11 attacks allowed the Bush Jews to put into place the Wolfowitz doctrine and its preemptive war on Islamic nations, which leads to the question of just how much Israeli intelligence about 9-11 did the Jewish faction of the Bush camp know prior to the attacks and the anthrax letters. Democrates have suggested that the Bush administration ignored warning signs of the 9-11 attacks. They're right; the Bush Jews knew 9-11 was coming!
Looking at these American Jews' involvement in 9-11, is it so impossible to believe that the Israelis would release a bio-weapon upon the American people? No, it isn't! The Jews have murdered Americans before when it served their purpose. While in international waters in 1967, 34 American sailors were killed and another 171 men were wounded by Israeli air and naval forces during an 80-minute, unprovoked sneak attack on the USS Liberty, an unarmed, reconnaissance vessel. An American court of inquiry found that the Israeli attack on the Liberty was no accident.
The reason why the FBI hasn't solved a case they thought would be straightforward is because they haven't considered the Israelis as the source of the anthrax. To quote The New York Times, 5/11/02, "The F.B.I. remains convinced that the attacks were carried out by an American with scientific training, not by Al Qaeda or a rogue nation, but critics fear the bureau is so wedded to this theory that it has become blind to other possibilities." Israeli intelligence knew about the al Qaeda plot ahead of time, and so they had agents in place to carry out the biological attacks prior to 9-11, either from the Weehawken spy cell, or associated with it at Princeton University, or some private laboratory sympathetic to Israeli, or even a U.S. government laboratory facility.
The Jews thought they could hide behind the notion that Iraq supplied al Qaeda with the anthrax. However, Israel is one of only a few nations that has the capacity to produce the especially high quality anthrax used in the letter attacks. And of those nations, Israel had the most to gain in sending the anthrax letters! The Jews have proven time and time again, that there is nothing they won't do to further Israel's interests in the Middle East and its fight against the Arab world, including killing Americans, stealing nuclear material from the U.S. to make weapons, committing military and economic espionage against the U.S., and tricking America into fight their battles for them.
The 9-11 anthrax letters are just another chapter in the long history of Jewish deceit and betrayal that America has suffered at their hands. The second you believe that the Jews aren't capable of the lowest things imaginable, you become a victim—like America. As Thomas Ridge said, "Clearly, we are up against a shadow enemy, people who have no regard for human life who are determined to murder innocent people". Israel is that "Shadow Enemy"!

The White Van —ABC 20/20
Millions saw the horrific images of the World Trade Center attacks, and those who saw them won't forget them. But a New Jersey homemaker saw something that morning that prompted an investigation into five young Israelis and their possible connection to Israeli intelligence. Maria, who asked us not to use her last name, had a view of the World Trade Center from her New Jersey apartment building. She remembers a neighbor calling her shortly after the first plane hit the towers. She grabbed her binoculars and watched the destruction unfolding in lower Manhattan. But as she watched the disaster, something else caught her eye. Maria says she saw three young men kneeling on the roof of a white van in the parking lot of her apartment building. "They seemed to be taking a movie," Maria said. The men were taking video or photos of themselves with the World Trade Center burning in the background, she said. What struck Maria were the expressions on the men's faces. "They were like happy, you know... They didn't look shocked to me. I thought it was very strange," she said. She found the behavior so suspicious that she wrote down the license plate number of the van and called the police. Before long, the FBI was also on the scene, and a statewide bulletin was issued on the van. The plate number was traced to a van owned by a company called Urban Moving. Around 4 p.m. on Sept. 11, the van was spotted on a service road off Route 3, near New Jersey's Giants Stadium. A police officer pulled the van over, finding five men, between 22 and 27 years old, in the vehicle. The men were taken out of the van at gunpoint and handcuffed by police. The arresting officers said they saw a lot that aroused their suspicion about the men. One of the passengers had $4,700 in cash hidden in his sock. Another was carrying two foreign passports. A box cutter was found in the van. But perhaps the biggest surprise for the officers came when the five men identified themselves as Israeli citizens. [click here to continue]
Israelis Trapped In Terror Roundups Cause Worry At Home, Anger At U.S. —The Atlanta Constitution
On the day after the world changed, Roy Barak and his partner were in an empty rental truck, eastbound on I-80 in northern Pennsylvania. The men were movers, near the end of a 16-hour deadhead run from Chicago to a chaotic New York. Over the truck radio, the 23-year-old Israeli Jew listened to the confusion that billowed from the rubble of the fallen World Trade Center towers. He heard the news reports that five suspected terrorists had been picked up in a white van headed for the city via the George Washington Bridge. Angry witnesses had seen the five at a waterfront park in New Jersey apparently laughing, clowning and photographing themselves in front of the burning towers. Barak had no way of knowing the arrested men were his friends, Israelis working for the same moving company. But he found out quickly. At noon Sept. 12, Barak and his partner, 25-year-old Motti Butbul, were blue-lighted by a patrol car and pulled into a rest stop. The formal charges were minor: a broken turn signal, a missing fire extinguisher and the fact that Barak had overstayed his six-month visa. Butbul also had no work permit. But the quick appearance of four FBI agents made it clear this wasn't a normal stop. A box cutter was found in the truck. "Then I disappeared," Barak said with a smile. He would not be seen again for nearly two months. Barak and Butbul reappeared only a few days ago, aboard an El Al flight to Tel Aviv and home. Barak was interrogated first as a possible terrorist, then as a potential spy. He said he did not see a lawyer for two weeks and never appeared before a judge. His parents did not know where he was for six weeks, until someone from the Israeli Consulate could sneak a cellphone into the prison. "I'm a little bit angry," Barak said. "I understand what they were doing. But it took too long." [click here to continue]
The Deepening Anthrax Mystery —The New York Times
It has been seven months since the anthrax attacks claimed their first victims, yet investigators seem no closer to finding the culprit than they were at the beginning. There was encouraging news this week that genetic analysis of the anthrax might prove a useful investigative tool, but for now the goal of identifying where the anthrax came from and who might have sent it through the mails remains as elusive as ever. The slow progress by the Federal Bureau of Investigation may be due in part to bureaucratic bungling. The F.B.I. has held information tightly to its vest, making it difficult for outside experts to fathom why its forensic analyses have progressed so slowly or suggest ways to speed the process. But it is extraordinarily difficult to analyze tiny samples of highly volatile material without seeing it vanish into the air or damaging its usefulness as potential evidence in court. The job is made all the more difficult by the dearth of experts on the intricacies of germ weapons. Work on offensive biological warfare has been banned in this country for decades, so few American researchers understand its subtleties. The latest mystery stems from the increasing sophistication of the anthrax attacks as time went on. As William J. Broad and David Johnston reported in Tuesday's Times, the anthrax powder became finer and more potent from one mailing to the next. There seems little doubt that the same person mailed all four letters that have been found -- the ones sent in September to NBC News and The New York Post, and in October to Senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy. The block lettering on all four is similar, and the F.B.I. has examined the cellophane tape used to seal the letters and concluded that the strips were torn successively from the same roll of tape. Yet the quality of the powder kept improving. The anthrax sent to the media companies was relatively crude and contaminated with harmless cells. The anthrax that was sent to Senator Daschle was more refined, with an extraordinarily high concentration of spores. It spread rapidly once the envelope was opened, but many of the spore clumps were too big to penetrate deep into the lungs where they could cause damage. The Leahy letter, mailed the same day as the Daschle letter, contained an even finer, highly volatile powder in which the anthrax spores were more uniformly small and dangerous. Saddam's Ultimate Solution - Host Interview Transcript —PBS Wide Angle
What are the chances that Saddam Hussein is feeding chemical and biological weapons to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda? And, if so, how prepared is the U.S. to respond? Would a regime change in Iraq bring greater stability to the region or muddy the waters further? James P. Rubin discusses the issues with Richard Perle, chairman of the Defense Policy Board, a Pentagon advisory group, and a former assistant secretary of defense under President Ronald Reagan.
James P. Rubin: Joining us now to talk about Saddam Hussein, Al Qaeda, and weapons of mass destruction is Mr. Richard Perle, chairman of the Defense Policy Board, a group that advises the Pentagon on national security issues. He's a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and was assistant secretary of defense for international security during the Reagan administration. He's speaking today on his own behalf. Richard, welcome to Wide Angle.
Richard Perle: Thank you.
James P. Rubin: Well, you've just seen Gwynne Roberts' film. And it raises some very explosive charges. I wonder if you could help us connect the dots. Why should the American people be concerned and what should they think having seen this film?
Richard Perle: Well, the thing that is brought home so clearly in this film is the connection among terrorist organizations now implicating Saddam Hussein directly with Al Qaeda, with a global terrorist movement that ultimately wishes to destroy the United States. What I think we're discovering is that terrorists, like criminals, are in touch with one another around the globe. I think if a safe cracker in Phoenix needs a safe cracker in Manchester, England, somehow they connect (Laughs). And the terrorists are connecting. They're working together, they're reinforcing one another, and they're sharing their tradecraft. And the result is that if we are going to prevail over the terrorists, we have to take them seriously wherever they are and we have to take this war to them in their countries, on their territory. Because if we have to stand and fight on our own territory, many Americans will die in the process.
James P. Rubin: You've been an advocate of intervention in Iraq. And one of the arguments you've used is that if we wait, that someday Saddam Hussein will transfer weapons like biological weapons to terrorist organizations. Having seen the film, do you think there is now a new rationale for early military action against Saddam Hussein?
Richard Perle: Well, the film of course confirms one's worst fears and apprehensions. Because the thing that many of us have speculated about is happening. There is that interchange. It is likely that chemical weapons, biological weapons in the possession of the Iraqis derived during the cold war from the Soviet Union are now being disseminated to terrorists. I don't see how we can ignore those connections that are made so clear in this film. So every day we wait is a day during which a plan may well be forming that could result in the deaths of a great many Americans. Time is not on our side. [click here to continue]
US Hawks Look For First-Strike Precedent In 1981 Attack On N-Plant Israel's Bombing —The Daily Telegraph (London)
As the Bush administration outlines its new doctrine of pre-emptive action against Saddam Hussein, Washington is paying growing attention to the clearest precedent for such action - the Israeli strike against a nuclear complex near Baghdad in 1981. At the time, the pre-emptive bombing of the nearly completed Osirak reactor was condemned by Britain, America, the United Nations and other nations as a clear breach of international law. Mrs Thatcher told Parliament: "It was an unprovoked attack and we must condemn that." But the strikes are now spoken of with sympathy by a growing number of Washington conservatives. Vice-President Dick Cheney, has repeatedly mentioned them in speeches, hailing them as a major setback to Saddam's nuclear plans. In a speech last month to US war veterans, he said: "Many of you may recall that Saddam's nuclear ambitions suffered a severe setback in 1981, when the Israelis bombed the Osirak reactor." This week, the former Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, became the first to make an explicit connection between the Osirak raids and the new Bush doctrine of pre-emption. Mr Netanyahu, invited to Congress on Thursday to speak to the house committee on government reform, recalled the pre-dawn raid of 1981 when Menachim Begin, then prime minister, sent nine Israeli air force jets to bomb Osirak. "Though at the time Israel was condemned by all the world's governments, even by our closest friend, history has rendered a far kinder judgment on that act of unquestionable foresight and courage," said Mr Netanyahu. "History's judgment should inform our own judgment today. "Did Israel launch that pre-emptive strike because Saddam had committed a specific act of terror against us? Did we co-ordinate our actions with the international community? Did we condition that operation on the approval of the United Nations? "No, Israel acted alone because we understood that a nuclear-armed Saddam Hussein would place our very survival at risk." [click here to continue]
Lawmakers Demand Answers From White House About Sept. 11 Warnings —The Associated Press
President Bush firmly defended himself Friday against Democratic suggestions that he ignored warning signs of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying "I would have done everything in my power to protect the American people" had he known of Osama bin Laden's plans. "I want the troops here to know that I take my job as commander in chief very seriously," he told Air Force cadets and officers in a Rose Garden ceremony honoring their football team. Bush's remarks reflect heightened concern at the White House over political fallout from revelations this week that he was told Aug. 6 that bin Laden wanted to hijack planes. Democrats and some Republicans in Congress have criticized Bush for not making the information public, and are questioning whether he could have done more to stop the attacks. Why Sharon Wants War —The Spectator
Gas masks and smallpox vaccinations are being dispensed, strategies for evacuation discussed: Israel is preparing for war with Iraq. This is a war which, as former UN weapons inspectors and others have warned, could be a disaster for Israel. Paradoxically, the Prime Minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon, is all for it. There are many reasons for Sharon to encourage the US and UK to go to war with Iraq. Domestically, he has failed to deliver, and needs the Falklands factor to save himself. Territorially, the US focus on the war against terror allows him to continue his policy in the Palestinian territories. And regionally, he fears that some time down the line Israel will face weapons of mass destruction unless something is done, pre-emptively and conclusively. No one in Israel is under any illusion: the onset of war on Iraq will lead to incoming missiles, possibly with chemical warheads. So why Mr Sharon's equanimity, indeed bellicosity? It may be that Mossad knows something that the British people have not been told, and that the Iraqi threat is less serious than Mr Blair's dossier would have us believe. More likely, Sharon believes that Iraq, and other Arabs, need to be taught a convincing lesson, missile risks notwithstanding An Iraqi war would also help Sharon to further his territorial strategy, confronted as he is with a growing international consensus on the need to establish a Palestinian state, to which even Bush has now assented. This is alarming for Sharon, and explains why diplomatic moves have never been further divorced from events on the ground. These include entire Palestinian communities being subject to continued curfews that fail to make international news; large-scale new projects to expand illegal settlements on the West Bank; building a security fence that cuts off villagers from their land and water; increasing the mesh of 'bypass' roads that divide the West Bank into unmanageable cantons; and a huge development ('the E1 Plan') that will sever Arab east Jerusalem from the West Bank and permanently divide the northern West Bank from its southern half. To continue with this policy, Sharon needs to scotch the peace 'road map' announced by the Quartet (US, EU, UN and Russia): a phased plan to bring the Palestinians to statehood, starting with internal reforms. FBI's Theory On AnthraxIs Doubted —The Washington Post
A significant number of scientists and biological warfare experts are expressing skepticism about the FBI's view that a single disgruntled American scientist prepared the spores and mailed the deadly anthrax letters that killed five people last year. These sources say that making a weaponized aerosol of such sophistication and virulence would require scientific knowledge, technical competence, access to expensive equipment and safety know-how that are probably beyond the capabilities of a lone individual. As a result, a consensus has emerged in recent months among experts familiar with the technology needed to turn anthrax spores into the deadly aerosol that was sent to Sens. Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.) and Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) that some of the fundamental assumptions driving the FBI's investigation may be flawed. "In my opinion, there are maybe four or five people in the whole country who might be able to make this stuff, and I'm one of them," said Richard O. Spertzel, chief biological inspector for the U.N. Special Commission from 1994 to 1998. "And even with a good lab and staff to help run it, it might take me a year to come up with a product as good." Instead, suggested Spertzel and more than a dozen experts interviewed by The Washington Post in recent weeks, investigators might want to reexamine the possibility of state-sponsored terrorism, or try to determine whether weaponized spores may have been stolen by the attacker from an existing, but secret, biodefense program or perhaps given to the attacker by an accomplice. The Defense Department and FBI refused repeated requests from The Post to discuss recent developments in the anthrax investigation. But in some important respects, the official version of events -- developed in part during the early, frantic days of the probe -- is at odds with the available evidence, the experts say. Officials Widen Hunt For Anthrax —The Baltimore Sun
Investigators offered new details about the anthrax used in the deadly mail attacks yesterday, as the bacteria sickened a State Department mail worker and federal officials widened the hunt for contamination to hundreds of mailrooms and post offices along the East Coast. Test results from the spores mailed to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle "confirmed our worst suspicions," Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge said yesterday. The bacteria were the most concentrated and highly refined of the samples linked to the attacks in Washington, New York and Florida. Spores found in a New York Post letter, in contrast, were as chunky as "Purina dog chow" under the microscope, one expert said. "Clearly, we are up against a shadow enemy," Ridge said at a White House briefing, "people who have no regard for human life who are determined to murder innocent people." The toxic trail of bacteria leading from a contaminated Washington mail facility expanded yesterday to a new area postal facility. A State Department employee who works at an off-site mailroom in Sterling, Va., has inhaled anthrax, the most lethal form of the disease, Washington Mayor Anthony A. Williams said yesterday. Anthrax Hunt Conspires To Dent Confidence —Financial Times (London)
A year ago today the first anthrax-laced letters were mailed in the US, igniting something close to panic among Americans facing their first terrorist attack with biological weapons. The two letters, dropped into a postbox in New Jersey, were headed for the New York Post and for Tom Brokaw, the anchor at NBC News. Over the next months Americans would don masks to open their mail and rush to fill prescriptions of the antibiotic Cipro as additional letters went to other news organisations and to Democratic political leaders. By the time the letters stopped, 18 people were infected and five dead. The Washington DC mail sorting facility, where two postal workers died of anthrax exposure, has yet to reopen. But after a year of investigation, US officials seem little closer to identifying the perpetrator. Their failure has generated a host of conspiracy theories and produced an ideological battle over whether the US has more to fear from Islamic extremists abroad or rightwing zealots at home. Conservative groups argue that a foreign government most probably sponsored the attack, and continue to point to Iraq as the only country with the means and the motive to carry it out. Liberal opponents of bioweapons research say the attack was almost certainly an inside job, probably launched by a disgruntled US weapons researcher intent on warning the country of the dangers of a foreign biological attack. The speculation has been encouraged by the huge holes that remain in the investigation. So far, the only progress has been technical. Scientists consulted by the government have identified the anthrax as coming from the Ames strain. This strain - developed from natural sources in the US - was first used in American bioweapons research in the early 1980s and is probably available to weapons researchers in the UK, Canada and Israel as well. Princeton P.O. Bin Has Anthrax Traces: FBI Probing Link With University —Daily News (New York)
A mail bin tested positive for anthrax at a post office a mile from Princeton University, where investigators have been asking questions in the hunt for bioterrorists. A postal worker at the West Windsor post office in Princeton Township - where much of the Ivy League school's mail is sorted - saw suspicious powder two weeks ago in a white plastic mail bin. Late Thursday, test results showed the powder was harmless but the bin itself contained a small amount of anthrax, said New Jersey's acting health commissioner, George DiFerdinando. Further tests were pending. The post office - which has now been closed - is a mile southwest of the Princeton campus, where FBI agents investigating the source of anthrax mail recently questioned members of the microbiology department. The FBI and postal inspectors say they're looking at whether the West Windsor post office was a drop spot for an anthrax-tainted letter. Checking connection: The small bin holds flat mail that goes to and comes from the Hamilton mail-sorting facility in nearby Trenton, where anthrax letters to NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, the New York Post and U.S. Senate Leader Tom Daschle were postmarked. It could mean that the mail bin picked up powder from the Hamilton facility, but it's believed this specific bin did not leave the Princeton post office, according to postal officials. "That's what we're trying to determine: How does this come about on a tray and could it be connected to the Hamilton facility?" said agent Sandra Carroll of the FBI's Newark office. Attenuated Nontoxinogenic And Nonencapsulated Recombinant Bacillus Anthracis Spore Vaccines Protect Against Anthrax.
Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Israel Institute for Biological Research, Ness-Ziona 74100, Israel
—Infection and Immunity
Several highly attenuated spore-forming nontoxinogenic and nonencapsulated Bacillus anthracis vaccines differing in levels of expression of recombinant protective antigen (rPA) were constructed. Biochemical analyses (including electrospray mass spectroscopy and N terminus amino acid sequencing) as well as biological and immunological tests demonstrated that the rPA retains the characteristics of native PA. A single immunization of guinea pigs with 5 x 10(7) spores of one of these recombinant strains, MASC-10, expressing high levels of rPA (>/=100 microgram/ml) from a constitutive heterologous promoter induced high titers of neutralizing anti-PA antibodies. This immune response was long lasting (at least 12 months) and provided protection against a lethal challenge of virulent (Vollum) anthrax spores. The recombinant B. anthracis spore vaccine appears to be more efficacious than the vegetative cell vaccine. Furthermore, while results clearly suggest a direct correlation between the level of expression of PA and the potency of the vaccine, they also suggest that some B. anthracis spore-associated antigen(s) may contribute in a significant manner to protective immunity. Report: Israel Has 'Ethnic Bullet'; Bio-Weapon Could Target Arabs —The Jerusalem Post
Israel has Developed "Ethnic Bullets" That Are Tailored To Target Only Arabs, the London-based Foreign Report will suggest today. Quoting an "unconfirmed report" from its South African sources, the newsletter says Israeli scientists may have succeeded in developing a biological weapon that is based on aspects of the Arab genetic system. These elements were reported to have been isolated after years of research on Jews of Arab origin, particularly Iraqi Jews. The South African sources claimed that the "ethnic bullet" program was developed in apartheid South Africa for possible use against blacks. Cooperation between South African and Israeli scientists is said to have been close during that period. "The report reaching us says the Israelis took the project over and directed it against the Arabs," noted the newsletter. "One of the reported conclusions was that there was a genetic difference between Ashkenazi Jews and Jews of Arabic origin, and also between Jews and Arabs." [click here to continue]
Israel Reported Developing 'Ethno Bomb' —The Gazette (Montreal)
Israel is working on a biological weapon that would harm Arabs but not Jews, according to Israeli military and Western intelligence sources. The weapon, targeting victims by ethnic origin, is seen as Israel's response to Iraq's threat of chemical and biological attacks. In developing their "ethno-bomb," Israeli scientists are trying to exploit medical advances by identifying distinctive genes carried by some Arabs, then create a genetically modified bacterium or virus. The intention is to use the ability of viruses and certain bacteria to alter the DNA inside their host's living cells. The scientists are trying to engineer deadly micro-organisms that attack only those bearing the distinctive genes. The program is based at the biological institute in Nes Tziyona, the main research facility for Israel's clandestine arsenal of chemical and biological weapons. A scientist there said the task was hugely complicated because both Arabs and Jews are of semitic origin. But he added: "They have, however, succeeded in pinpointing a particular characteristic in the genetic profile of certain Arab communities, particularly the Iraqi people." The disease could be spread by spraying the organisms into the air or putting them in water supplies. The research mirrors biological studies conducted by South African scientists during the apartheid era and revealed in testimony before the truth and reconciliation commission. The idea of a Jewish state conducting such research has already provoked outrage in some quarters because of parallels with the genetic experiments of Dr. Josef Mengele, the Nazi scientist at Auschwitz. Advisors of Influence —The Center for Public Integrity
Of the 30 members of the Defense Policy Board, the government-appointed group that advises the Pentagon, at least nine have ties to companies that have won more than $76 billion in defense contracts in 2001 and 2002. Four members are registered lobbyists, one of whom represents two of the three largest defense contractors. The board’s chairman, Richard Perle, resigned yesterday, March 27, 2003, amid allegations of conflicts of interest for his representation of companies with business before the Defense Department, although he will remain a member of the board. Eight of Perle’s colleagues on the board have ties to companies with significant contracts from the Pentagon. Members of the board disclose their business interests annually to the Pentagon, but the disclosures are not available to the public. "The forms are filed with the Standards of Conduct Office which review the filings to make sure they are in compliance with government ethics," Pentagon spokesman Maj. Ted Wadsworth told the Center for Public Integrity. [click here to continue]
Politics & Economy - Conflict of Interest? —NOW with Bill Moyers
No one has been more vigorous or vocal in advocating a war against Iraq than Richard Perle. Once an Assistant Secretary of Defense for Ronald Reagan, he left the administration in 1987. In 1996, Perle helped write a study for an Israeli think tank calling for the removal of Saddam Hussein and has since been a major architect of the war now taking place against Iraq. Richard Perle has been a lobbyist for a foreign arms merchant and other governments. His venture capital firm invests in businesses related to national security. Recently the investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reported in the NEW YORKER that Perle has used his proximity to Donald Rumsfeld to solicit investments for his firm. Perle responded with a libel suit against Hersh. Then a few days ago, it was learned that the bankrupt telecommunications company Global Crossing has offered Richard Perle over half a million dollars to get defense department approval for its takeover by a foreign corporation. The person who would make that decision is none other than Richard Perle's close friend, the man he regularly advises, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. [click here to continue]
War Out Of Compassion —Der Spiegel
By attacking Baghdad, US president George W. Bush wants to fulfill a divine order. In the highly religious United States, there has rarely been such a deep connection between national power interests and fundamentalist false piety. Christian fanatics are calling for a crusade against Islam. Washington is a god-fearing city. One of the rituals at the White House is that cabinet meetings begin with a prayer. The president asks one of his cabinet secretaries to say a few words of reflection, and those in the room bow their heads, close their eyes, and fold their hands together. Old soldier Donald Rumsfeld beseeches God to curb the "lust for action." A bible study group also meets regularly to discuss and interpret selected passages from the New and Old Testament. Although White House employees are not required to participate, someone is certainly taking notes on who attends and who doesn't. Devout, moral and good people populate the official headquarters of the president. Swearing is forbidden, and no one smokes or drinks. No one can work there who is unable to fulfill the unwritten criterion of "no joint since college." David Frum, the president's former speechwriter, enthusiastically reports that a "modern Evangelism" pervades this beautiful building on Pennsylvania Avenue. [click here to continue]
The War Behind Closed Doors —Frontline
Pres. GEORGE W. BUSH: [January 28, 2003] Trusting in the sanity and restraint of Saddam Hussein is not a strategy, and it is not an option!

Anthrax Cases in D.C., N.Y., Fla. Share Virtually Identical Strain —The Washington Post
Federal investigators confirmed Friday that the strains of deadly anthra spores mailed to New York, Washington and Florida are virtually identical, as federal agents, tracing the possible path of one letter laced with the bacteria, focused attention on a blue mailbox in suburban New Jersey. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge told reporters that "tests to date have concluded that the strains [of anthrax] are indistinguishable" and likely came from the same source. The matching results provided the clearest indication yet that the same person or group is likely responsible for sending anthrax spores through the mail to Senate Majority Leader Thomas A. Daschle (D-S.D.), NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw and American Media Inc. in South Florida, where a photo editor died after inhaling the microbes, officials said. [click here to continue]
First At-Home Anthrax? —Daily News (New York)
A woman in New Jersey who hasn't been to the post office in six months tested positive for skin anthrax yesterday - possibly the first case of someone getting sick from mail delivered to her home. "This is a mystery," said New Jersey Acting Health Commissioner George DeFerdinando. "We're presuming it was by the mail - but was it by her home mail, was it by her work mail, was it by work mail near her? We don't have the answer right now." The news broke hours after the federal government tried to reassure regular folks that their mail is safe by saying no one has gotten sick from what is looking like massive mail contamination in Washington and New Jersey. "There have been no documented cases at all of an individual getting a letter personally from [a contaminated] facility and winding up getting disease," said Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health. But a few hours later, it seems there was: the 51-year-old bookkeeper for a firm in Mercerville, N.J., who tested positive for skin anthrax on a forehead lesion that appeared Oct. 17. The woman, who is recovering well, lives near the tainted mail facility in Hamilton but told authorities she hasn't been to any post office in six months. [click here to continue]
Experts Adjust Approach To Each New Anthrax Case —The New York Times
The response to the new anthrax case at CBS News was decidedly lower-key than the response to the very similar case at NBC last week, health officials said yesterday, because epidemiologists are applying the lessons they have learned since they began their investigation. The CBS News building, on West 57th Street in Manhattan, was not evacuated. Workers -- including the woman who tested positive for anthrax spores -- remained at their jobs. And health officials did not recommend antibiotic treatment for large numbers of workers. All this was in sharp contrast to the response at NBC when a case of cutaneous anthrax was diagnosed in an assistant to Tom Brokaw on Oct. 9, said Dr. Stephen M. Ostroff, an epidemiologist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We have so much more information based on our experience and what the epidemiologic patterns tell us," Dr. Ostroff said in an interview. The woman at CBS developed cutaneous anthrax, the most treatable form of the disease, on her cheek on Oct. 1. The source of the infection is not known; although she handled mail, she did not recall having opened a letter and being exposed to powder. It is not clear when she was exposed to anthrax spores, but the normal incubation period for cutaneous anthrax is one to seven days. Anthrax is not contagious, so the risk of her co-workers' developing it is almost negligible, said Dr. Ostroff, who is in New York City supervising the agency's investigation of cases associated with NBC, ABC and CBS. Epidemiologists have found that the circumstances at all three networks appear similar. Only one person has developed cutaneous anthrax at each network, Dr. Ostroff said. Also, anthrax spores have not been identified in any of the nasal swabs taken among more than 300 co-workers of Erin O'Connor, the NBC employee who developed cutaneous anthrax, Dr. Ostroff said. The Liberty Affair —The Washington Post
No single incident within memory involving the United States and a friendly nation has left a more bitter taste than the sinking of the intelligence ship USS Liberty off Gaza during the 1967 Mideast war. Thirty-four American Navy men died in an 80-minute Israeli air-and-sea assault that Israelis have attributed ever since to a case of mistaken indenty: they say they mistook the American electronic surveillance vessel for an Egyptian supply ship. An American court of inquiry found that an "unprovoked" Israeli attack had been made on a ship "properly marked as to her identity and nationality" but did not speculate on the reason for the attack. More recently, a retired Navy officer who was wounded in the attack, alleging a cover-up, has reported some telling details. [click here to continue]
Israel Defies Western Appeals Over 'Closed Military Area' On Arab Land —The Independent (London)
Israel has openly defied Western pleas to avoid extending its conflict with the Palestinians in the aftermath of the attacks on the United States by confirming that its army is to turn a large tract of Arab land on the West Bank into a "closed military area". The decision, which violates international law, has deepened the growing belief among European nations that Ariel Sharon, Israel's Prime Minister, is undermining Washington's plans to recruit Arab and Islamic states into a coalition. Mr Sharon has made clear he does not intend to adapt Israel's policy towards the Palestinians to accommodate international pressure to cool off the conflict so as not to deter Arab countries from joining the American drive to crush those behind last week's terror attacks. In interviews to mark the Jewish New Year, Mr Sharon said: "Our clear, unequivocal message is that this will not be at our expense." The worry among the Europeans is that Israel's increasingly harsh tactics will inflame the conflict, stirring up emotions in countries, such as Egypt or Jordan, with close ties to the Palestinian cause. This does not appear to have deterred Mr Sharon, who has launched a drive to equate the terror against the US with atrocities suffered by Israelis in its long territorial dispute with the people whose lands Israel occupies. Israel Says It Won't 'Pay Price' Of Coalition —The Washington Post
As it ushered Arab countries into a multinational coalition against Iraq a decade ago, the first Bush administration persuaded Israel to stay in the background, even to hold its fire when Iraq launched Scud missiles at Tel Aviv. Israel's current prime minister, Ariel Sharon, has made it clear that times have changed. In a series of pugnacious pronouncements since the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, he has insisted Israel will not sit quietly as the current Bush administration seeks to build a coalition of Arab and Islamic states against terrorism. "It is inconceivable to grant [Yasser Arafat] legitimacy because someone thinks that might facilitate the inclusion of Arab countries in this coalition," Sharon told the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Aharonoth, referring to the Palestinian leader. "We will not pay the price for the establishment of this coalition." As it rages on, with both sides seeking to squeeze advantage from the crisis, the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis may for several reasons impair Washington's ability to assemble an anti-terrorism alliance in the Middle East and beyond. US Policy In Mideast Under Scrutiny —The Christian Science Monitor
"You have to understand that the bullets that are fired at us, the missiles fired at our homes, and the Apache helicopters that the Israelis use - we know that all these things come from the US, and they are killing Palestinians," says Hani Jubah, a burly street merchant in East Jerusalem. His stall is around the corner from where some Palestinians celebrated Tuesday's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. These outbursts have created a public-relations pitfall for the Palestinian cause, but they also highlight what may be the central motivation for the attacks: US policy in the Middle East. The Middle Eastern origins of the attacks remain a matter of speculation, but US officials have identified Saudi militant Osama bin Laden as their main suspect. Authorities in Boston have identified five Arab men as suspects, and have seized a car at Logan Airport containing Arabic-language flight manuals, according to a report in yesterday's Boston Herald. At the same time, regional leaders from Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat to Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi have condemned the attacks and sympathized with the victims. Many Muslims and Arabs have been alarmed by Mr. bin Laden's emergence as a suspect. Sheikh Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, the leading cleric of the majority Sunni sect of Islam, yesterday added his voice to a chorus of outrage. "Islam is a religion which rejects violence and bloodletting," he said in a statement reported by the Egyptian state-run news agency. But analysts of the Middle East say it is likely that bin Laden acted in concert with other groups and perhaps with the acquiescence of one or more governments. If this scenario proves true, they envision a multitiered US retaliation that would target several entities across the region. If the attacks on New York and Washington are indeed a reaction to US policy in the Middle East, the next phase of the crisis may presage a widening conflict between the West and the adherents of Islam. Israelis Have Left 'Horrifying' Scene In Jenin: UN Envoy —The Ottawa Citizen
A United Nations special envoy called yesterday for an investigation into Israeli military actions in the Jenin refugee camp, which left a "shocking and horrifying" scene. Terje Roed-Larsen, who toured the Palestinian camp on the West Bank for the first time yesterday, said it was "morally repugnant" that Israel had not allowed search and rescue crews in after the fighting. "It looks as if an earthquake has hit the heart of the refugee camp here," Mr. Roed-Larsen said. "There's a stench of decaying corpses all over the place here, the scene is absolutely unbelievable." The special envoy to the region demanded an immediate withdrawal of the Israeli Defence Forces and the lifting of a curfew to allow humanitarian agencies access. [click here to continue]
Widening The War —Sydney Morning Herald
Amid mixed signals from the United States, Israel appears to be pursuing a broader target than just rooting out terror, writes Paul McGeough. Palestinians freed from curfews on the rubble-strewn West Bank are discovering this weekend that Israeli tanks and helicopter gunships came after more than the "infrastructure of terrorism". Also targeted were the bureaucracies that managed their finances, health and education, farming and industry, and even their statistics. Israel's Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, insisted that his sweeping military push into the West Bank was a security measure to "root" out the Palestinian militias that trained the suicide bombers wreaking havoc in Israel and to gather up their weapons and explosives. But as rising world anger focuses on destruction in the refugee camp at Jenin which the UN special envoy, Terje Roed-Larsen, described as "shocking and horrifying beyond belief ", staff in the agencies of the internationally funded Palestinian Authority were assessing what appears to have been the systematic stripping of the vital, if mundane, information systems across all arms of Palestinian government. In the 19 months of the Palestinian uprising--the Intifada--Israel has repeatedly bombed buildings attached to the Palestinian security services. And, in holding Yasser Arafat responsible for the wave of deadly suicide attacks, Sharon has declared that the Palestinian leader cannot be a peace partner for Israel. The Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation was also bombed after Israeli accusations that it stirred hatred and violence. [click here to continue]
C.I.A. Concluded, Ex-Aide Says, That Israel Made Nuclear Arms —The New York Times
The Central Intelligence Agency concluded some years ago that Israel had developed nuclear weapons, aided in part by uranium diverted in the mid-1960's from a plant in Pennsylvania, according to a former Deputy Director of the agency. In an interview this week, Carl Duckett, Deputy Director for Science and Technology from 1967 to 1976, said there had been a ''clear consensus'' in the agency that the ''most likely case'' was that the Israelis had fabricated nuclear weapons with 200 pounds of enriched uranium diverted from a nuclear processing plant of the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation in Apollo, Pa. ''I believe that all of my senior analysts who worked on the problem agreed with me fully,'' Mr. Duckett said in an ABC News documentary on nuclear weapons and the Middle East. Although there have been many reports that Israel has nuclear weapons and that its nuclear program benefited from the diversion of uranium, this was the first time that a former agency official with direct knowledge had publicly made such an assertion. U.S. Now Tells of Much Deeper Damage by Pollard Than Thought —The New York Times
Adamant that President Clinton refuse requests that he grant clemency to Jonathan J. Pollard, an American spy for Israel, United States military and intelligence officials say Mr. Pollard did more damage to national security than the public has been told. An article to be published in The New Yorker on Monday cites those officials as saying that Mr. Pollard, who was arrested in 1985 and is now serving a life sentence, gave Israel invaluable American intelligence secrets in exchange for payments of $50,000 and promises of $540,000 more. Intelligence officials today confirmed the gist of the magazine article, written by the investigative reporter Seymour M. Hersh. United States intelligence officials have long suspected that information delivered to Israel by Mr. Pollard was subsequently obtained by the Soviet intelligence services -- either deliberately handed over by Israel in exchange for freedom for Soviet Jews or surreptitiously obtained by Moscow's spies in Israel. Mr. Pollard and his supporters have contended that he did not do real damage to American national security and should be pardoned or paroled. [click here to continue]
